Building A website, for someone with a pocket full of sticks.

So starting to write a blog in the throws of a global pandemic, really has me ip dip dooing over where to start wafting my opinions and sharing my thoughts. But i’m going to side step ‘all the stuff’ to give myself a little breathing space. I’m new to this and it might actually be nice to start by talking about the thing I made instead….this website, that I lovingly refer to as the rabbit hole.

I needed something to do during lockdown that felt forwards moving and useful. Digital was King, so a website it was. It was something I’d been thinking about for a while. I got a quote from a brilliant professional but as I’d just lost all my work to Covid, that wasn’t an option.

D.I.Y Time

I am not technical. I survive and I can learn- sure, but it doesn’t come naturally to me. It was cathartic to surround myself with the archives of my work. Looking through all the photos of past projects, blurbs and feedback was fun. Then deciding how to present all that to you, was a little more daunting.

It took me way longer than it should have done. Partly because I had the time to spend and because I pretty much had to google everything before I made a move. Tutorials, reviews, facebook polls, searching out favours from anyone remotely foolish enough to mention they knew websites. But slowly I waded through the themes, gutenbergs, widgets, plug ins and special didgery do das, made some decisions and was on my way.

There are undoubtedly still some mistakes lurking which you may find and of course I’d love a friendly heads up if you notice anything so I can put it right. I’ll keep faffing with it for a while but I felt it was time to put it out there as I simply couldn’t look at it any longer! I’d tweaked, made everything, bigger, smaller, squarer, rounder, thinner, fatter and put it all back again. Time to share.

You Are What You Do

It’s an interesting process to go through, deciding what a website with your name as the url (that’s right i know stuff!) is going to say. Deciding what you are and what you do, especially in a time where that all felt like it had disappeared down the toilet. But it was super useful and weirdly clear. It seemed the simplest and most authentic approach to this was simply, you are what you do.

You are what you do. I like this sentiment. I do quite a few things, always have and it became obvious to me very quickly that I wasn’t willing to omit swaithes of what I did to sit comfortably into one category or another. There are always reasons why we become interested in what we do, we all have very different journeys that take us all over the place and we pick up all sorts of stuff along the way and I’m grateful for that.

So after an amount of time that I’m not quite willing to divulge, we are at this point. Website in phase one and a bloomin blog post- how very modern of me.

As I prepare to go for my daily bit of exercise I’d like to just say thank you to all the beautiful talented people I’ve had the pleasure of working with.

It’s not always possible to revel in the full loveliness of things at the time but my golly having the time to think about all the things I’ve been lucky enough to be part of and all the delightful people I’ve worked with has been brilliant. I’d like to say a great big teary eyed Thank You to the lot of you. We’ve had a blast, long may it continue!

I hope you’ll explore the rabbit hole, see how it works for you and let me know if you encounter any problems.

Finally get in touch if you fancy working with me. I’d like that.

Bye for now, it’s just stopped raining so i’m going to get a wriggle on.
